Symposium - Future Challenges in Water Resources Research

February 18, 2020

Powerful Women in Science
The Symposium “Future Challenges in Water Resources Research” focuses on the impact of water management projects. The keynote lectures will deal with morphological changes and their ecological effects. Secondary effects such as the formation of blue-green algae blooms and greenhouse gases in reservoirs will also be discussed. Large water projects are always a societal topic we want to talk about. Our topic is strongly interdisciplinary and well balanced between engineering disciplines, natural and social sciences. However, women in such disciplines are strongly underrepresented. It is obvious that the number of women decreases the higher they climb the academic ladder (from students to doctoral candidates and to research group leaders). For this reason, we organise this event that focuses on women’s competences. The research work of internationally renowned female scientists will be presented during the symposium. This top-class event is of course open to everyone: female, male or diverse.

On 18th and 19th February 2020 the Symposium „Future Challenges in Water Resources Research“ will take place at the University of Stuttgart (Vaihingen).

Keynote Talks:

  • Response of River Channel Geometry to Measures and Natural Change
Dr. ir. Astrid Blom, TU Delft, Netherlands
  • Ecology, diversity and function of freshwater biofilms
Dr. Katharina Besemer, Water Cluster Lunz, Austria
  • Cyanobacteria in water ecosystems
Prof. Dr. Kaarina Sivonen, University Helsinki, Finnland
  • Methane Emissions from Reservoirs
    Bridget Deemer, Ph.D., USGS, USA
  • Governance Challenges in the Water-Energy-Food Nexus
Prof. Dr. Claudia Pahl-Wostl, University of Osnabrück, Germany

Beside these brilliant keynote speakers, a portrait movie will be presented about females in different positions in science from Professors, to Post Docs, PhD Candidates and students. The first day will end with a nice dinner and the band “Women of Music”. The second day continues with keynotes and a Science Slam around the topic of Water Resources Research.

If you visit the website under https://charm.hfk-designlab.de/ you will recognize that all protagonists are women. And this represents the idea of the symposium. The symposiums aims at presenting Powerful Women in Science.

It is without saying that everybody, no matter which gender, is warmly welcome to this symposium.

Detailed program and registration are available here. (or go to https://charm.hfk-designlab.de). Due to financial support of the Gender consulting department of Universität Stuttgart, we are able to offer low registration fees.

A full registration is 80 Euro and a (PhD)-student registration is 20 Euro.
