A guide to expressions that are frequently used in the university context

Admission Letter Zulassungsbescheid The admission letter is the documented statement of 'the right for enrollment' = 'admitted' of the competent admission commission of the concerned course of study . Admission letters are valid for one admission period only. Admission lettters are typically necessary for 'Student Visas' and necessary for enrollment.
Basic Module Grundlagenmodul «Examination Unit» of the 1st term. Basic Modules may be implemented with one «Lecture» or two Lectures.
Course Veranstaltung Course is the global term for lectures, exercises, labs and seminars.
CP (Credit Points) Leistungspunkte Credit Points are the measure of work associated with achieving a grade/marking of an «Examination Unit/Module» according to the European ECTS system. 1 CP represents at the University of Stuttgart 30 hours of work.
CPE/CAE   Cambridge Proficiency in English and Cambridge Advanced English are proofs of English Language Proficiency.
Enrollment Einschreibung (Immatrikulation) Enrollment is the act of becoming a member of the University with all the rights and obligations imposed by the State University Law, the Statutory Regulations of the University and the Study and Examination Regulation of the concerned course of study. Enrollment is done by submitting and/or presenting the required forms and documents to the enrollment officer. Specific months are designated for enrollment as given on the admission letter.
Examination Unit Prüfungseinheit The Examination Unit has a Grade/Marking [Note] assigned and a number of Credit Points «(CP)». All «Modules» and the Master Thesis Project are Examination Units. A Module may be implemented by a «Lecture», a lecture and a «Exercise» or several Lectures and Exercises. In case of several lectures and/or exercises, each of it may have an examination or similar. leading to a performance indicator (Grade/Marking/points etc). The Grade/Marking of the Examination Unit (Module) is then calculated from the individual examination results of the lectures - typically as mean -. In this case individual fail of an examination is not possible., i.e. if a module is implemented through several lectures, each having individual examinations, all of them have to be re-done in case of failure of the Examination Unit (Module).
Exercicse Übung(en) Exercises are to gain experience in solving problems for which methods and tools have been taught in the associated «lecture».

HEI Higher Educational Institute A UNESCO generic term for tertiary higher educational institutions like 'University'.
HVVO Hochschul Vergabe VerOrdnung Regulation of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg with regard to the capacity (seats) of a study program. In case of INFOTECH 80 seats.
IELTS   International English Language Test System is a proof of English Language Proficiency.
Lab (Laboratory Couse) Praktikum or Pül (Praktische Uebungen im Labor) A lab course is for practical training, conducting experiments or explore new fields. A lab course, differently to «exercices» is not associated with a specific «lecture».
Lecture Vorlesung A lecture is the traditional way of teaching a subject/subjects in front of a class.

Module (Teaching Module) Modul A module (same holds for «Basic Module») is the basic administrative element of the program. Credit Points have to be collected on module level. The INFOTECH program need a total of 15 modules with 3, 6 or 9 Credit Points. Modules are implemented by «Teaching Units».
NT (Non-Technical) Nicht-Technisches Wahlpflichtmodul This is a «module» with lectures from the field of business processes an law.
Present Vorlegen In INFOTECH this word is used e.g. in conjunction with "to present at time of enrolment". It's meaning in INFOTECH is to "show" a document, typically an original, to the concerned officer. The document may be copied by the officer, but we don't keep the original.
Program Year (PY) Jahrgang Program Year PY, e.g. PY13, defines the year of the program start. If ,e.g., the program applied for, enroled or registered starts winter term 2013/14, the program year is PY13
SEM (Seminar) Seminar, Hauptseminar A seminar is an activity comparable with the first month of a Master Thesis Project. It is the implementation of a «module».
Specialization Vertiefungslinie The Terms «focus», «Major» and Specialization are used with the same meaning. Specialization (INFOTECH has 4) is the collection of Modules out of the INFOTECH set of modules, with a strong relation to the topic expressed by the title of the specialization.
PO or SER Pruefungsordnung or Study and Examination Regulation PO (from German Pruefungsordnung)or Study and Examination Regulation (SER)denotes the relevant examination regulation for a given Program Year intake. All students of program years up to PY13 study according to (Study) and Examination Regulation SER'09, all students from program year PY14 onwards according to regulation SER'14.
Submit Einreichen In INFOTECH this word is used e.g. in conjunction with "submit missing documents or submit documents along step 2". It's meaning in INFOTECH is to "physically send (by Post) or electronically (pdf)" a document. The document is kept (filed) at the concerned office and will be never returned. Final physical/electronic destruction is governed by German Personal Data Protection Policies.
Teaching Unit Lehreinheit A lecture (course), related Exercise(s), Seminar, Lab Course and Master Thesis Project are Teaching Units. Teaching units can be found on lsf for look-up of times and dates.
